Première compétition professionnelle de rugby à XV. En 1996, les trois fédérations sud-africaine, australienne et néo-zélandaise s'associèrent pour organiser une compétition a laquelle doivent participer des franchises de leurs provinces respectives. Avec le soutien du magnat de la presse australienne Rupert Murdoch (l'initiateur des grandes compétitions rugbystiques à XIII), cette compétition se lance dans les pas du football américain professionnel. Entrées sous fumigènes, pom-pom girls, sponsors à gogo et couverture médiatique .. rien ne manque. En 2006, le Super 12 devint le Super 14 en intégrant deux nouvelles franchises. La compétition se déroule de février à mai.
