Peu connue du grand public, cette compétition est néamoins une des plus ancienne du sport mondial avec plus de 115 ans d'existence. Ce qui en fait une des plus prestigieuse du rugby mondiale.
Soumis aux contingences géographiques et historiques de l'Afrique du Sud, elle a changée plusieurs fois de format.
Actuellement 8 équipes (en fait des franchises provinciales) forment un championnat de premier division. Les quatres premiers se disputent la Cup.
Le rugby sud-africain est divisé en 14 provinces rugbystiques. Chacune d'entre elle est représentée par une équipe : 8 en D1 (appellé Premier Division) et 6 en D2 (appellé First Division). Les 2 derniers de Premier Division affrontent en barrage, les 2 premiers de First Division pour la montée.
